Commercial potato peelers, or chippers, use a rotating base and an abrasive inner compartment wall to remove the skin of potatoes as well as any remnant earth. A constant flow of sprinkled water removes soil and potato skin automatically.

Using a potato peeler reduces the cost of raw ingredients with very little manual effort, peeled potatoes being more expensive than those which are bought unwashed and unpeeled.
